Barnoon Workshop, Alfred Wallis, Bob Deveraux

Above and below are two works done at our Workshop on Alfred Wallis today, at this point I have to admit that the top one is mine. It is always good art practice to study others work even if you don't work in that area as I don't.

I love Alfred Wallis' work and have a feeling that he was a more complex painter than it first seems, his vision/memories seem to be very complete. The effect he has had on so many artist and copyists has been remarkable.

Today has been an interesting day for many reasons some good, some not so good. It looks like we have a meeting next week to discuss and forward the St Ives Lantern Parade 2016 that is based at Barnoon and looks like year 2 will be much bigger. More funding is need and it looks like we will get some good funding this year.

The above pic is something I did a few months ago it took a good few hours work. I remember really being in the chill-out zone doing this one, I have put this up as I have not taken a pic of the work I did last night as it is still unfinished.

Last night was the third part of Waldemar Janusczyk's Art in The Dark Ages was a great view into Islamic art, some wonderful mosaics.

My head is now full of art from my own and others work. I am also thinking that now being based at The Workshop and not in our old cafe we are away from the Literary Festival that is put on by Bob Deveraux. So for tonight I will leave you with a pic of Bob doing his thing with Laurence Crallan a couple of years ago or so in Cafe Art, the back drop is and exhibition by my wife Zoe Eaton.

Start The Week - New drawings and Barnoon Workshop

Above is the artist taken on his way to work today for this mornings 'Drop In and Draw' workshop at Barnoon. Zoe Eaton led this session below are some examples.

It was a fun session with many different styles.

After lunch I then went to do a guitar with one of my students, nice session out-lining the chords to the blues song St James' Infirmary.

The back to the workshop and off to The Rum & Crab Shack for a quick pint of Surfbum and an info dump of today's events. So much to talk about and nothing I can mention here but the struggle to help keep arts and crafts alive in this part of the world continues. New drawings, thoughts, dots and grids

Above is a new drawing that I started Friday and finished last night, 24 grids and lots of dots.

Above is a drawing constructed using the wedge end of my new letraset marker with berol pen dots.

Above is the bleeding narrative version without extra dots, nice and pure I think.

Above is the next bleed with letraset set dots in each grid.

Above is the final bleed, both the above might not be finished yet but I thought I would show them to you anyway as a good reference to how I work.

Today we must have been very tired from our week and finally had a lie-in and then up to Barnoon Workshop to do a few things, we put a new sign up near the workshop and near Porthmeor Beach. We then took a wander around town and visited Deborah at the Sloop Art and Craft Market. There is a unit becoming available there.

I also did a short art drop today...

Truro, Kestle Barton, new drawings.

Above a new drawing completed in one session. In the critique of my work by me, I am finding this a slight break from the norm as a line and dot drawing goes, using four berol water colour pens to do the lines and then using a uni pin to do the dots around the form.

Above the second drawing completed last night, metallic gel pens and a uni pin. I am thinking now that I can stand back from this pair that they are quite influenced by my wife's work. I may ask if I can put a couple of Zoe's drawings in my blog over the next while. She really is one of my greatest influences in life and art. I also have many other influences, Hayley Tompkins and Andy Goldsworthy to name two big ones. I first saw Hayley Tompkins work on a Beck's Futures program an really liked her little works and really got into her mindset of going with the flow or transgressing the flow, she illustrated that by ding small works on lined paper sometimes working with the lines and sometimes not. Andy Goldsworthy is another person who has been a huge influence, from his work ethic, playfulness and the look of what he does along with the ethereal nature of what he does. If you have not seen Mr Goldsworthy's work what are you waiting for he really is and has been at the top of his game for a long time now.

Today I have been to Truro with my wife to pick up some nice paper for further work and I also got a new letraset pro marker. We also picked up some indian ink too for the workshop. After our little shopping experience we then drove to Kestle Barton to see the opening of Naomi Frears' Exhibition, interesting videos out of her studio window looking out onto Porthmeor Beach and new works based on 'Frenchman's Creek' The Daphne Du Maurier book/film. The whole exhibition I think benefitted from the setting of the old restored barn that is new Frenchman's Creek itself.

We then wended our way back via Sainsbury's at Helston and have now settled in for dinner and some art, listening to Giles Peterson and the Craig Charles....

I am now wondering what art I will do this evening.....

Drawing, walking, 'small' art drop and Peter Lanyon.

Above is part of a 'small' art drop I did today, the smallest of these is placed outside the Barbara Hepworth Museum. I have been dropping small pieces outside 'The Hepworth' for a while and I am always amazed how long these are not found, one in March was there for almost three weeks.

Above is a drawing I managed last night in one sitting, using a berol water colour pen ad a uni pin pen. I do love how it just appeared on the paper over a couple of hours or so.

Today didn't start too well for various reasons but it has got better, the weather has helped and getting out of town for a hour or so distributing posters and flyers has helped morale too.

Above is a shot of a plaque on a rock just on the seaward side of Rosewall Hill, not easy to make out in this image but it inscribed 'Peter Lanyon Artist and his dates. I know he is not buried here so I must research why it is here, I have been told it was one of his special inspiration places. He took to gliding in the years up to his death in a glider crash but I guess the view is like one of flying in the air and looking down. A magic place, especially on an early May day like this, hazy but very warm.

Gorgeous hazy views. This is part of why we live here despite the lack of big money, it does rebalance you and is a tonic for the soul.

I also popped into the UYS Gallery today to drop in some Barnoon Workshop flyers. Now I am thinking of what to have for dinner ad what else I will draw today.

Work and work and work!

Here are two new drawings, I think they might be finished but I am not sure yet another good hard stare at them later and I will know whether to start a new drawing or continue.

I got handed a form today to encourage me to enter the open exhibition for Printing, Ceramics and Drawing at the St Ives Society of Artists. I think I must put in some entries as it is a free one. I just need to catch up on the rules and then I can work out what goes in or what I have to finish. I do need to gain a bigger presence in this town and everywhere really so I had better do it.

Today has been an odd day, still no power at the workshop this morning for our clay class, which will be the last one for a while, three different guitar lessons, followed by returning to the workshop to let Western Power in so they could give us a temporary supply until they can works out where the job needs to be done. So we have light at last.

Outside of all that we are still the land of sea fog, this blessed misty isle.

It has been a long day today so no long revelations just a tired fella in need of his bed.

Naomi Frears, Kestle Barton, new slate drawing.

Above is the new slate drawing it took 3 evenings to complete also managed to forward on in my sketchbook, which is already turning into the bleeding narrative of quite a lot of my recent sketchbook work. It does make me think that I could bring it in to my larger scale drawings, if I do I will have to find the right ink pens to bleed through the thicker grades of art paper, I have always got research ad development on the brain so I can share different aspects of my work across the broad sheet of it all.

Today the 'artists' work has included a small amount of dots in my sketchbook, some additions to the website, emails to get more stuff up on other peoples websites. After that myself and my wife went to meet our friend Valerie for coffee at the new Brewhouse Cafe in St Ives it is up on the top car park. She is part of our water colour group and all round staunch Barnoon Workshop supporter and soon to become a tutor too. She is working on some creative writing workshops so we can spread our courses even further.

I left the cafe in light rain and walked across town to the workshop to do a guitar lesson which went very well as my hair dripped. After that I then got a lift home and we started dinner, Zoe is now preparing some painting experiments as it cooks and I am writing this.

Oh the glamorous life of a poor artist. Still we have been invited to an exhibition opening on Saturday at Kestle Barton, an art space on the Lizard Peninsular, I believe that the wife of Tate director Nicholas Sarota has an interest in. I am looking forward to this as it is an exhibition by St Ives artist Naomi Frears. It will be good to see her new works and take in this art space we have not visited yet. I would love an exhibition there, I imagine that that is a while off if ever but hey who knows what happens in the future. I just have to get myself out there more somehow find some more places to exhibit and get my name around.
