New work nearly finished, Roy Walker and other drawings.

Wednesday:

Above si the drawing I started in last evenings drawing session and I nearly finished it too and will show it tomorrow when finished, it looks like an abstract code to me and I don't know what you see in it.

Today I have been up to our workshop to do a few things and when I left to meet my wife I went down Barnoon Hill, the scaffolding you see has been erected for the works on The Barbara Hepworth Museums roof, apparently it will re-open some time in March.

I met my wife in the library to get some posters copied and above is this Roy Walker from 1989. I never met Roy but I do know his son and wife and indeed in our previous life as art cafe proprietors we held a retrospective exhibition called Ten which was the first exhibition of his work to commemorate ten years since his passing and was organised by his son Leo, wife Peggy and the family it was a lovely show and even got in The Guardian listings. It is good that some of his work is around in this town. Roy Walker was one of the players in getting The Tate to come to St Ives which has certainly changed the dynamic of this town in many ways.

This is going to be quite a short blog today as I have had quite a lot to deal with with people I never want to work with again and would be wrong of me to write out of anger and frustration.

So I am going to share a few previous works and tgry and think happy thoughts.

Above is a drawing I exhibited this time last year at The St Ives Society of Artists, it sold and I have no idea where it is now.

I also draw on many things other than paper and so above and below two examples of me drawing on rocks.

I am now off to draw and forget about the negative things that have happened today.

Tuesday:

I must first report that I have finished another drawing in my latest 'whole sketchboook' work and I am very happy with the way the idea has turned out. I do try to visualise what a drawing will look like when I set out the rules at the start and this one has turned out better than initial thoughts had led me to believe.

I was hoping that the weather would be good enough that I would get people on my art tour and draw but I have to admit it was too cold and windy so after staying about 30 minutes at Barnoon Workshop I went off to distribute leaflets and posters for our future events. Above is the view from above Porthmeor about 11:15 this morning.

Above is a sign that brings sadness to the folk of St Ives and to visitors alike our best grocers have finally closed it will be greatly missed good luck to Mr Trim and co.

Earlier this year my friend and 'the artists friend' Jordan Laurence Jackson came and took some photos of some of my art and here are three pics of one drawing I did about a year ago and I hope his pics give you and idea of the work and the industry it took to get it finished.

It was executed with a uni-pin fine liner .01 pen and took many many days of work.

Another pic that Jordan took on that day is this drawing above that was also a bit of an epic task to complete, they both give you an idea of some of the work I do that I call 'Contemporary Abstract Drawing'.

New work in progress and some other drawings to show some of what I do.

Sunday:

 Above is a drawing I started yesterday and got quite far with in last nights drawing session so I would think about 4 hours work so far and I will continue it when I get to draw later.

Today I have not done 'art' so far because I had a client for my guitar course and it was a good starter session with a good student who worked very hard.

Above is a larger scale drawing and now it is heading into winter I will hopefully have a bit of time to get a few more larger scale works and below are some examples of drawings from various points in the last two years. I have spent some time being more colourful but I always like to be rooted in monochrome. Although the new drawing I am working on is monochrome at the moment I will be adding colour in the second phase.

Above another drawing from a whole sketchbook work but using my obliterarty style.

Above is a large A1 size drawing that took rather a lot of time it seemed like a huge task but day after day and in spare moments I added dots into each grid. I did it in non evening drawing session time and it must have taken 6 to 8 weeks of fitting drawing in with life and that can be a logistic problem but I have to fir it in.

Above is a post Monochrome Set drawing using the same initial ideas but then adding colour, it seemed a logical extension of what I had been doing earlier this year.

Above is a much older drawing from my first whole sketchbook work which was my first serious journey into what I do now, which is mostly about mark making, dots and lines and over recent years adding colour too.

I am off to draw now so I have something to show the world tomorrow. It is important to me that I keep creating and work hard to explore my ideas.

Friday:

 Above is the drawing I nearly finished last night and did complete the twelfth  in the book whilst at the workshop today.

Before I could man the exhibition today I had a coastal path drawing session with a family from Chesterfield, the weather stayed good enough and it was a pleasure.

Above is one of the drawing I did in the drawing group on Monday morning that I only got round to documenting today. It was quite a liberating session for me and it fitted in with the altered book works I have done in the past. It was a real fun class and I really enjoyed drawing on some cut outs from The National Geographic and it is all research for further work.

This above is the second drawing I did altering pics from an edition of The NG about the volcanic eruption at Mount Helena.

I then went on to altering some pelicans.

I then went on to a more humourous phase as many others at the drawing group did in the last ten minutes of the class.

Since the class on Monday altering other images has been resting in the back of my mind and also I have been thinking of other ways to draw architecture and therefore I combined the drawing class with altered books and architecture so above and below are my alterations to a Japanese book I got from a table top sale in The Crypt a while ago.

After we decamped from Barnoon we went for a little jolly as it is our 5th wedding anniversary.

Whilst at the Rum & Crab Shack I studied our new book/catalogue that we got from The Belgrave Gallery on the influential 'St Ives' artist Sven Berlin and an interesting viewing it is too.

Wednesday:

It has been quite a day today it started going up to the workshop to get ready for our exhibition that opens at the weekend but I had a drawing tour to do which was a very small affair but a delight.

Since then I did more 'white wall painting' to get everything ship shape for the Hand Held View show.

This afternoon was spent between workshop and home as we were getting ready to go to Tate St Ives for a preview of the new show and phase two opening. We duly pitched up at 5:30 for the opening, with our free wine tickets. It was an utter delight to see all the galleries working together a fabulous St Ives Modernist and the outside influences.

There was a real buzz in the gallery tonight lots of people we know either in the gathering throng or Tate workers themselves smoothing the experience and even explaining if you were not 'down' with it.

I was told it was fine to take pics of all the show tonight but there seemed to be a concern that we shouldn't share them on social media tonight so I haven't, one has to respect that but I will share them in a day day or so's time. I really like most of this exhibition and want to go back to soak it up more. It has been the first time I have seen works by Christopher Wood next to Alfred Wallis and Ben Nicholson a fitting part of the story of St Ives art without all the others  involved, Peter Lanyon, Walter Scott, Adrian Stokes, Sandra Blow, Bryan Winter, pottery from Troika and loads I have not mentioned. Another thing that really connected me to this opening show is seeing books by Sven Berlin on Alfred Wallis and invitations to shows at The Crypt printed by Guido Morris. A real insight into the art movement that emanated from this small Cornish fishing town. I really recommend this exhibition to all and sundry, art lovers and newbies alike, it might just have a positive effect on you and if not it will have some sort of effect on you. I have heard tirelessly 'Emperors New Clothes' non-thought out rubbish doesn't rub with me much. Having said that if you have come to this fresh it might feel like that, read on and immerse yourself you could get a lot out of this show.

I think the overall impression I have from this experience in The Tate tonight is that this is really quite something whether you get it or not, it is an experience.

After the show I did a guitar lesson for two and then met up with my wife and Erin for a post show pint and then spent time with loads of other friends. My blog is late tonight because of all this....

I did do some drawing last evening and might fit in a small amount tonight but I will show evidence of that tomorrow, probably.

After having said all this you should go and see the Sven Berlin show at The Belgrave Gallery St Ives it puts into context the show at the Tate even more so... if you are interested in looking more deeply.

New drawing, Tate St Ives and 'Hand Held View'

Tuesday:

Above is my new drawing that I thought I had completed but I have just notice a few small gaps missed which I will sort before I get the next drawing started. Below is a close up of this drawing.

Above and below are two drawings I also did yesterday in the 'small drawings' session on Monday morning. It is not easy drawing small things.

This morning we have mainly been in the workshop receiving more entries to 'Hand Held View' and then we spent lunch overlooking Porthmeor and as we turned I took this pic of The Tate and looking at it now there is not much sign of then opening phase two this weekend. So after our lunch we nipped back up the hill to our workshop just at the side of the new Tate extension we carried on our work to get ready for our opening show that opens this weekend as well. I am looking forward to going round tomorrow as we have been invited. Having followed this project very closely indeed through its entirety it will be good to see the new exhibition spaces all joined up and indeed the new show and of course how they feature St Ives modernists.

Another blow is today we have found out that there is no funding for the Lantern Parade this year which is such a shame as we started the St Ives Lantern Parade nearly 3 years ago and sadly looks like it wont happen this year.

Well I am off to get some things done and also get some drawing and thinking.

Exhibition In A Box - Abstract Drawing

Monday:

This morning I took the drawing group for the second week running and then we continued to get bits of the workshop ready for the Hand Held View exhibition that opens with the private view on Saturday evening, This afternoon Zoe did a watercolour class I went to find out what had happened to the funding for The Lantern Parade unfortunately I have found out nothing, if we don't find out soon it will be too late for us to deliver what we have been asked to do. I hope we get news soon.

Last evening I did start the fifth drawing in my new book work but I forgot to take a pic of that so will show what might be a nearly finished drawing in this blog tomorrow. I also forgot to transfer other drawings I did today in the drawing workshop this morning.
